Concert reports should be typed, 12 point font, 1" margins, 1-2 pages.
Concert reports will be graded on how you address the following issues:
1. Respond in a critical fashion to the music you hear, put down your detailed observations about the piece of music, and express your observations in an intelligible way. Use terms you have available to you and as have discussed in class such as tempo, dynamics, pitch, melody, rhythm, density, texture, form, etc. In a concert you can discuss the concert as a whole, but you must also discuss 1 or 2 pieces in detail.
2. After you have identified specific elements, such as dimensions of the piece, how long in time, volume, constant, small distant, quiet, loud, present - then discuss how the piece changes over time. What are the rates of change and type of change? Location of sounds, foreground, background, Does perspective change or shift as the piece continues. Does this change over the course of the piece or during the concert.
3. Speculate on the relationship of the music/performers to a listener. Don't just describe your own listening experience - observe yourself and go beyond this and speculate on the function of the music. Speculate on the intent of the composer and performers. Is piece meant for an installation, elevator music, does it gradually reveal details and require intense focus or does it have sharp contrasts? What is its use, and how does it relate to user. How does one relate to a grapefruit? Does one juice, boil or fry. How does one live in a house in Japan? What is the experience of it? Speculate on how one would listen. What is the function in the listeners lives? Who would listen to it? Why would they listen to it.
4. Finally discuss the experience of being in a live concert and how you imagine this would differ from listening to a recording of this music.
